That's a really interesting perspective. I'd say EC has *become* more calculating in his lyric-writing over the years: the early albums are booze-and-coke splurges, often, and even the middle period, when he sobered up, are more freeform. Sometimes his latterday lyrics have been a bit stiff, or arch; but generally he's still capable of writing a beauty or two.
