I don't believe Newton argues that eyes 'absorb' or 'retain' the light they see, though it's possible he does. Since writing this post I've been looking into this, and it's quite a widespread belief (for example the notion that if you examine a murder victim's eyes they will somehow contain the image of the face of their murderer since that was the last thing they saw).
